Veterans get free screenings

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Veterans from across the sate are getting a free check up thanks to the Sight, Sound and Sugar health fair at the G. V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson.

It's a first of its kind open invitation screening, targeting all veterans who are currently not enrolled for health care at the medical center. From vision and hearing screenings to weight control and mental health evaluations, organizers say some returning veterans often think they're healthy but later realize that's not the case.

By taking part, those veterans are also evaluated to determine whether they qualify for medical benefits through the center.

"It's a benefit they've earned and we feel like we provide some of the best healthcare here in the state of Mississippi," said Chief Business Officer Fred Nichols.

Another free screening is slated for November.
