Sound Off: More than Just Wins

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Alcorn State University just named Jay Hopson their head football coach.  Coach Hopson is the first white head football coach in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.  In 2004 Mississippi State University named Sylvester Croom as the first African American coach in the Southeastern Conference.

When it comes to racial reconciliation I am proud of Mississippi literally changing the face of football in the South.   Alcorn and MSU are to be commended for demonstrating true leadership.  In both cases they hired the most qualified candidate regardless of color.  The true measure of their success is developing these young men to make positive contributions when they leave school.  Unfortunately it is the number of wins they produce as to how they will be remembered.

My hope is that Coach Hopson wins lots of games, but more importantly wins the respect of his players and alumni.
