Stokes offers solution to escapes at Raymond Jail

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Hinds County supervisor, who recently toured the jail, says he was shocked at the conditions there. He says there's only one sure-fire way to prevent another escape.

"Close it. Close it now before someone is killed or hurt badly, and the county doesn't have liability. What the county must do with the city -- if the city wants to jointly do something with the county, then let's jointly build a new one. If not, the county must protect themselves," said Stokes. "Get our inmates out. Put them somewhere else, whether we have to rent space somewhere else in other counties, let's do it and let the city do what it needs to do with their own city people that's in jail. That's not a jail, that's a cross between a hotel, motel, and a campground. Inmates are not supposed to be walking in and out like they're doing."

Stokes has previously called for the City of Jackson to pay a greater share of the jail's expenses, since city inmates are housed there.
