JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One of the bumpiest roads in Jackson is finally getting a long awaited and much anticipated fix. Fortification Street in Belhaven is scheduled for a massive make-over. City officials say the project will start early next week.

The improvements to Fortification Street will stretch from North State Street to Greymont Street. In addition to re-surfacing the road, new water lines, sewer lines, traffic signals and sidewalks will be installed. The sidewalks will be ADA accessible. Also, Greymont Street to Jefferson Street will go from four lanes to three lanes, with a middle turn lane.

Construction on the project is expected to last 18 months. The nearly $9 million project was bid to Hemphill Construction.

The City of Jackson will host a ceremonial groundbreaking at the intersection of Jefferson and Fortification Streets at 11am Wednesday.

At 5:30pm, the public is invited to attend a neighborhood street party to celebrate the start of the road repairs. That party will take place at Basil's restaurant at 904 E. Fortification Street.
