Man to serve 54 years on Rankin Co drug charges

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A stiff sentence for a Texas man who pleaded guilty to drug charges in Rankin County.

Twenty-eight-year-old Shaun Mays was sentenced to 54 years in prison for possession of marijuana and cocaine.

In November 2008, Flowood police pulled Mays over in a traffic stop.  The officer says Mays appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and Mays admitted that he had smoke marijuana earlier in the day.

Police searched the vehicle and found three pounds of pot, nine ounces of cocaine and 1.5 ounces of crack.

Mays pleaded guilty to possession charges in March 2011. He was allowed to remain out on bond pending his sentencing a few days later. But he never showed up.  He was re-arrested during a traffic stop in December. During a search of that vehicle, officers found a firearm and nearly $23,000 in cash.

He was re-arrested and has been in custody ever since.  He faced Rankin County Judge John Emfinger May 21 and that's when he was sentenced.
