Closing arguments Friday in election fraud trial

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Testimony has concluded in the Jackson City Council Ward 3 runoff election trial.  Joyce Jackson is claiming supporters of the winner of the race, Council member Larita Cooper-Stokes, broke election laws and called her racial slurs election day.

Defense attorneys rested after calling just three witnesses. Poll worker Linda Anderson testified she only helped voters with disabilities, and didn't tell them what candidate to choose.

Jackson claims there was a radio playing vote for Stokes ads in the polling place election day, which would be a violation of the no campaigning within 150 feet rule.

Anderson testified, "We were told we could play the radio, but when that commercial came on to either turn it down or off."

Jackson and her attorney's contend the ads could have influenced undecided voters.

Jackson also claims racial slurs about her mixed race were yelled when she visited one of the precincts.

Josie Stokes, the Mother of Supervisor Kenneth Stokes, testified she didn't hear any comments made towards Jackson about her mixed race.

"There's certainly no way in the world I would have done that," said Stokes on the stand.

Closing arguments will begin Friday morning.

This is a civil jury trial.  Jackson is not seeking monetary damages, but instead a new election.
