JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Businesses and animal lovers united to help care for the pets at CARA.

Putting on the Dog, a benefit for the Community Animal Rescue and Adoption, was sponsored by Great Scott and several businesses in the Fondren area.

Basil's, Rooster's and Campbell's Bakery also participated, providing food for the event.

The rain didn't put a damper on the event that took place on the parking lot in front of Great Scott.

Families brought their pets out for a day of mingling and meeting new friends.

It was also a chance to see some of the wonderful CARA animals that are up for adoption.

The Mississippi Corvette Club was also on site with more than a dozen vehicles on display.

CARA officials said fundraisers like this are an opportunity for supporters to donate money, food and supplies to help keep the no kill shelter afloat.

"This is important because we receive no funds from the government. So everything from the shelter comes from donations from people, from people who will have events like this and that will come out and support events like this," said CARA board member Denise Cantrell.

A silent auction was also part of the day's fund raising efforts.
