Cook off lures BBQ lovers to Canton Square

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Masters of the barbeque grill competed for major prizes Saturday while trying to lure crowds to the Canton Square.

The annual barbeque cook off contest was sponsored by the Greater Refuge Temple.

Despite the rains, the grills were fired up offering savory choices of ribs, pulled pork and more.

Organizers said the contest is designed to bring people to downtown Canton for a day of food and fun.

"We wanted to do something to bring life here rather than going down to Jackson or down into Ridgeland or Madison. We wanted to do something here to let the community know that we have something to be grateful for," said Greater Refuge Temple Pastor Walter Veals.

"We've actually won this contest. Out of five years we've won four of them. It's actually for the people of Madison county in trying to bring awareness to Canton that this is really a great place," said barbeque contest participant John Blackstock.

The barbeque contest is in its 14th year.
