EDWARDS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Saturday afternoon's rains didn't damper the evening's 49th annual Medgar Evers Homecoming Celebration.

Hundreds gathered at the Edwards livestock arena to listen to music and enjoy great food.

The slain civil rights activist is remembered for helping bring equal rights to Mississippi.

Those gathered at this weekend's events will remember the reason there is a celebration and how far the state has moved forward since evers was killed.

Medgar Evers still has a number of family members in the Jackson area.  His brother, Charles Evers, said, "We just try to keep Medgar's name alive so they know what he died for, for why we have these kinds of freedoms. We didn't have them when he was here.  He never registered.  He never voted.  He never was able to get a drink of water from a public water fountain. Now we can."

The homecoming celebration in Edwards concluded this weekend's events.
