JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Heavy rain from Monday night splashed right into Tuesday morning's commute. The severe weather caused numerous power outages, traffic lights down and electrical lines and trees scattered throughout the area.

Jackson resident James Studaway who lives near Dorgan Street and Flowers Drive in Jackson received a bit of damage to his property.

"Tore the meter base off my house and messed up the wall a little bit," said Studaway.

The severe weather also caused problems in Brandon's Crossgates community. Electrical wires wrapped around one another and several trees toppled.

Speaking of trees toppling, a massive tree snapped from the ground in the Belhaven community. It covers the width of Peach Tree Street and nearly crushed a silver mustang parked on the street.

One of the most serious weather related incidents occurred Monday night in Brandon. Fire crews rushed to a home in the Windsong neighborhood after witnesses reported lightening striking the house. The fire, caused by the lightening, was so powerful it torched a car and caused other significant damage.

"There was damage to both adjacent structures it was a heavy wind driven fire," said Brandon Fire Chief Rob Martin.

No one was injured in the home.

"There were two teenage children there that did escape and were physically unharmed," said Martin.

Storms are expected to stir again Tuesday evening.
