Rankin county residents invited to flood risk open house

FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

While severe weather is finally out of the area, it's likely we'll get another bout of heavy rain at some point in the near future. That means many of you may want to consider looking into flood insurance.

Residents in Rankin County are invited to a flood risk open house on Wednesday evening at Northwest Rankin High School. Local and state officials will be on hand to talk to residents about potential flooding near their homes, flood insurance and floodplain development.

Every several year's counties create new flood maps. Those that come out tonight will have an opportunity to look at those maps and learn more about whether or not their home is in the flood plain.

Homeowners who live within the flood plain are required by federal law to buy flood insurance. However, flood insurance is beneficial for all homeowners because more than 25% of all residential flooding happens out of the flood plain.

The Flood Risk Open House is from 5PM to 7PM.
