Gary Road repaving slated for September

BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Byram residents complaining of bumpy travel on Gary Road can expect construction of a new roadway in about three months.

Mayor Nick Tremonte said the roadway will be milled and repaved the entire 2.5 miles from Terry to Davis Road.

Plans call for a fourth lane to be added in front of the three schools in the area, Gary Elementary and Middle schools and the Head Start.

The mayor said the superintendent of Hinds County Schools requested that work not get underway at the start of the school year.

The pothole patched two lane roadway is a problem for motorists who often drive in the middle of the street to avoid the uneven edges.

Barring delays, officials said the project should be completed in about four months.

"If we start the middle of September, 120 days is the middle of January, but you're talking about holidays in there. So that puts us to the end of January, but that's also rainy season. January's rainy season...This will cause inconvenience. There's no question about that, but the long term good outweighs the temporary inconvenience," said Mayor Tremonte.

The estimated $1 million dollar project will be financed through board approved municipal bonds.
