Suspect in custody following standoff

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police have a man in custody after a standoff Thursday afternoon at 3936 Hanging Moss Road, near the intersection of Northside Circle.

Believed to be armed with a gun, a suspect barricaded himself inside a home. For more than two hours, Jarvis Durr, 19, kept law enforcement at bay.

Eventually, a SWAT team took him into custody without incident. No one else was found inside the house.

Durr is charged with rape and armed robbery. Officers did not disclose if Durr lived at the house where the standoff occurred.

As Durr was taken into custody, residents stood by and watched nervously.

Heavily armed police had been on the scene since receiving a report of an armed robbery and sexual assault, about 1:20 p.m., at a store in Hanging Moss Plaza. WLBT is told it happened at Charmz, a clothing store.

"He must have took her in the back and she ran and knocked on another business owner's door, saying she had been raped and robbed. And he called the police, when she was on the phone with police, that's when she noticed the guy peeping from over there at the house," said cosmetologist Lawanda Monach. She works at a beauty salon just a few doors down from Charmz.

A nearby barber, Greg, says police did a good job of keeping the community safe Thursday afternoon, but more people have to get involved to prevent crime.

"Everybody needs to quit trying to keep a blind eye to what go on around here and start telling on these folks that's out here clownin' like that."

Once the standoff was over, many business owners wanted customers to know the plaza is a safe place to shop.

"She's (the unidentified victim) a real good person. She doesn't ever bother anybody. She's been over here for a couple of years now. But like I said, we've never had anything like that to happen over here. It's a big surprise for everybody," said Monach.

Police have not said when an initial court date will be set for Durr.
