A family is whole again after their injured loved one returned from a deployment to the Middle East. This soldier was welcomed home, for a Father's Day he'll never forget.
India Vail stood-by her step-son Brendon with a face of eager anticipation; Awaiting the arrival of Brendon's dad, and her husband.
"Some many have come together to show their support for him" said India Vail. "We're just ready to see him, really."
After almost a year, their wait is over. John Michael Vail emerges and pulls Brendon on his lap.
While joyful, the reality is Vail is returning to his family different from when he had left. Vail is paralyzed from the waist down.
He was injured when the Hum-Vee he was driving flipped while conducting a patrol in Kuwait in March. While recovering in Germany he admits the reality was difficult to accept.
"Waking up everyday realizing I was paralyzed" said Vail. Wasn't nobody there. Finally I'm home."
A different realization hit Vail as he made his way through the terminal. Scores of people have been supporting him and praying for his return.
"We found out after I got injured that there's a lot of good people left in the world. A lot" said Vail. "The things people would go out of their way to do."
The weekend couldn't be more appropriate. Father's Day will take on a whole new meaning at the Vail home this weekend as he catches up with who he has missed.
"Everything" said Vail "My family's my life. I got it planned out. I got family night, friends night and quite night."
