Juneteenth Festival at Battlefield Park

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One of many Juneteenth Festivals took place at Battlefield Park in Jackson Saturday.  The Community was invited to come out to enjoy free food, music, and fun.  To help celebrate, various community organizations offered free preventive health services. Some of those services included blood pressure checks and glucose screenings, as well as information on HIV and AIDS.

In addition to helping the community, organizers said they wanted to shed light on what Juneteenth was all about.  "Juneteenth is a celebration of the emancipation of African slaves, specifically those that were in Galveston, Texas.  They found out about being emancipated two years after the fact so once they actually found out it became a huge celebration," said Michelle Perkins of the JSU SMHART Institute. The next celebration will take place starting at noon June 23.
