Juneteenth Festival at the MS Museum of Art

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The arts and history combine to create a special celebration in downtown Jackson Sunday afternoon.

The Mississippi Museum of Art hosted its first Juneteenth festival.

Live music, various vendors, along with health and wellness programs were available to enjoy.

There were even healthy soul food cooking demonstrations.

Organizers hope the event will remind residents how the holiday shaped today's society.

"We really wanted people to understand the importance of Juneteenth. We wanted them to know about the role it plays in our American history and world history. And so, we just wanted to bring people out, introduce them to, you know, introduce Jackson to what Juneteenth means to the world," said event organizer Shameka Reed.

Organizers hope the celebration will become an annual event.
