GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -
Dozens of small-breed dogs and puppies were taken from a single home in George County this week after authorities were told the animals had been abandoned by their owner. Most of the dogs are Chihuahua/Terrier hybrids, and are between three and five months old.
The first wave of dogs arrived at the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) in Gulfport Tuesday morning. Because George County has no animal control agency, the sheriff's department made a special request for the Humane Society's assistance.
Officials said the dogs were reportedly abandoned several weeks ago when their caregiver left the area. They'll go up for adoption as soon as they are given initial vaccinations and flea treatment.
"Considering the home they came from, each of these pups is in great spirits as they await their new home, but we need your help to adopt them out quickly so that they can finally experience the warmth and love of a normal home," said Tara High, HSSM Executive Director.
Because summer is such a busy time for the shelter, HSSM is seeking immediate homes for these animals. Adoptions are first-come, first serve and will begin as soon as the dogs and puppies have been processed and receive initial vaccinations.
Adoption fees for the rescued dogs and puppies will range from $50-$100, depending on age. All animals adopted will receive the following:
- Spay/neuter surgery
- Updated vaccinations
- Updated rabies vaccine
- Microchip and engraved ID tag
- Thirty days free pet insurance
- Free vet visit within 7 days of adoption
- Heartworm tests for all dogs over 6 month
- Starter bag of Hill's Science Diet food
- 10% off in HSSM's BowWow Meow Boutique
