JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Jackson inner city church has become the target of people who steal large air conditioning units. The Rock of Ages Church has about 60 members, and is located at 2947 Bishop Street in northwest Jackson, just off Bailey Avenue.
Instead of just taking the copper out of the air conditioning units, which is worth thousands of dollars; twice in a week the entire units have been taken from church.
"This is where we had our new air conditioner that we just replaced" said pastor Belinda Williams. "Two weeks ago they came in a stole one, but on Friday night they came back and took all three, of the units. Their souls need to be saved. You know they really do. Because you have got to be heartless to take from a church."
"You know in the past we have seen where thieves will go and take the copper out of units, in order to make a sale to buy drugs with" said Jackson Assistant Police Chief Lee Vance. "But recently we have had instances where units have been taken, not only from churches, but other buildings. Obviously they have developed a market for them. You know it takes a despicable individual to steal from somebody else, in the first place. But for somebody to go on the property of a church, and steal property, I think, takes it to a different level of lowness."
Police welcome any help they can get in solving this crime.
