Habitat mortgages paid in full

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There was a celebration at Habitat for Humanity headquarters in Jackson that would have most of us jumping for joy.

One by one, proud homeowners shredded mortgage papers showing that their notes are paid-in-full after 20 years.

The four here moved into some of the first Habitat houses built in the metro area in 1991 and 1992.

Minnie McMullan is one of those who qualified back then.

"It is a blessing to get this far and not have to worry about anything anymore; about a place to live," said McMullan.

"It's a day where we mark what this ministry does every day; moving families out of substandard housing and in decent affordable homes. And it just shows, for a family to succeed in life, they need a decent place to call home and that's what has happened for these families. They've had a place to succeed," said Cindy Griffin, Habitat for Humanity executive director.

Griffin says there are many success stories within the families who have moved into Habitat houses.
