JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A central Mississippi native is forced to step down as the president of the University of Virginia. Teresa Sullivan was asked to resign after being on the job less than two years.

She cited "philosophical differences" with the University of Virginia's governing Board of Visitors in her resignation. The board gave no reason behind her departure. However, concerns have been expressed about the school's lack of progress in the area of online education.

Sullivan's resignation has sparked protests on the Charlottesville, Virginia campus.

The Faculty Senate gave a vote of no confidence in the governing board.

Sullivan became the university's first female president August first of last year.

She graduated from Jackson's St. Joseph High School in 1967.
