Jackson police have made an arrest in connection with the theft of an air conditioner from a northwest Jackson church. Assistant Chief Lee Vance says Willie Morris, 27, of Jackson is charged with receiving stolen property. He lives on Edwards Avenue, two blocks away from the church.
Police not only made the arrest, they recovered one of the air conditioning units stolen and returned it to the church. It is a five ton Trane unit.
Vance credits WLBT with assisting police in getting the tip that led to the arrest of Willie Morris.
"Well we got a tip from the public after the story aired by WLBT. Called us, gave us a tip where the stolen item was, and we had detectives to go out there and recover the stolen air conditioner," said Vance.
The pastor of the church, Belinda Williams also credits WLBT with helping in the arrest and return of the air conditioner.
"I believe it. Yes sir, I believe that. Because otherwise I don't think we would have found it this quick," said Williams.
WLBT also discovered there was a similar theft of an air conditioner last Tuesday at the Rectory of St. Mary's Catholic Church in west Jackson.
"Cut the pipe that goes from the air conditioner to the building. And took the whole unit, took the whole unit," said Tanya Britton.
In addition, we have confirmed a sound system was stolen from Greater Clark Street Baptist Church on Gallatin Street about 2 a.m. Thursday. A window was broken to gain entry.
