Vicksburg doctor, former lawmaker dies at age 79

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Dr. Chester Masterson, a prominent Vicksburg physician who served two terms in the Mississippi House of Representatives, has died. He was 79.

Officials at Glenwood Funeral Home said Friday that Masterson died Wednesday at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg after a lengthy illness.

The Quitman County native received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1960. He practiced in Batesville for two years before moving to Vicksburg in 1964.

He was elected to the House in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the state Senate in 2007.

Survivors include by his wife, Martha Ann Gordon Masterson; three brothers, two sons, two daughters and 13 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church.
