Governor briefed on T.S. Debby's effect on coast

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Governor Phil Bryant is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Debby as it churns off the Florida coast.

Bryant met with MEMA officials Sunday afternoon and asked for a briefing on the movement of the storm system.

As of 4 p.m. Sunday, Debby has traveled north toward the Florida panhandle after remaining stationary most of Saturday.

The governor and MEMA Director Robert Latham are in communications with local emergency management officials on the coast.

"We're not sure where it could turn any direction at anytime as most tropical storms can. So we are not looking at a dangerous situation, but we have to prepare for it," said Governor Bryant.

"We started doing things earlier in the week like pushing forward sandbags to the counties. Some of them already had them. So three lower counties now have those sand bags. We have sandbags in Pearl River County because there are some low lying areas that have homes that typically flood," said Latham.

MEMA officials said Debby's development is a good opportunity for residents to prepare as the hurricane season progresses.
