Miss Mississippi Pageant begins

Forty-two young women are in Vicksburg for the next week competing to win the title of Miss Mississippi 2012.

The contestants arrived at the Vicksburg Convention Center Sunday morning to begin a week of rehearsals, judges interviews and preliminary competition.

The young women represent communities from all over the state. Each contestant is required to volunteer their time to an important issue. They've chosen causes close to their hearts, from hunger, to illiteracy, human trafficking and childhood obesity.

"I had an opportunity to speak along side First Lady Michelle Obama and its really brought so many amazing opportunities that you know, why not do this pageant?  It offers so many great things that will be valuable to me in the future", said Chassidy Sumler, Miss Madison County.

"Every child deserves the opportunity to have a music education. And that's why I really plan to dedicate my life in pursuing that", Grace Claire Cordes, Miss University of Southern Mississippi said.

"As a young girl I was so shy and so afraid to even be in front of people but through volunteerism I realized that I could lead through service", said Kayla Snow, Miss University.

The Parade of Contestants is scheduled for Monday night at 7 in Downtown Vicksburg.
