JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Within a year's time, the City of Jackson and other areas to the south could notice better water pressure. A groundbreaking was held Thursday for a huge water transmission line in north Jackson.
The 54-inch pipe will be deliver double the volume of water to Jackson's old plant. It's part of a massive upgrade to the infrastructure of Jackson's aging water system.
Mayor Harvey Johnson called it a necessity Thursday.
"It means if we had an episode like we had in 2010, we are going to have the ability to pump more water throughout the system which is going to minimize drops in pressure and people not having water in the system," said Johnson.
This huge pipeline will be installed from Westbrook Road in north Jackson through the Pearl River swamp to the newer O.B. Curtis water plant.
It will cost $8.6 million dollars and is part of a $30 million dollar water/sewer project.
