CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Early on Friday morning hot air balloon pilots filled their balloons with air. All of the pilots come equipped with unique and colorful balloons. They're participating in the 26th Annual Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Fest.

"We're trying to see who's the better pilot as far as accuracy is concerned it's not a race to the finish line it's an accuracy event," said hot air balloon pilot Tim Slattery.

The balloons end up wherever the wind takes them.

"Mother nature controls that because we have to follow the wind that's how we steer the balloon find the different winds at different altitudes."

Most hot air balloons can soar about 500 to 600 feet off the ground per minute, however during this weekend's fest, balloons aren't expected to get more than a couple thousand feet off the ground.

Pilot Mike Hanson has flown balloons for 23 years. He said his balloon is so large that 69,000 basketballs could fit inside. Hanson said he was born to fly.

"Flying is something you're born with, it's just something that gives you a feeling of freedom," said Hanson.

The annual festival isn't just a competition. The weekend also includes various family activities like the balloon glow. Plus, there's the chance to see some special balloons like the "when pigs fly" and "humpty dumpty" balloons. All of the fun raises money for families in need.

"The money goes to the Good Samaritan Center, we help families and individuals in emergency crisis situations," said Joanna Puddister, the Marketing Director for "The Good Samaritan Center."
