The Art of Commemoration in Vicksburg

Posted: Updated:

There's something new and informative at the Vicksburg Military Park. A new guidebook entitled The Art of Commemoration was unveiled this morning on the steps of the park's Illinois monument.

The book points out details in the art and architecture. It features monuments to battles and struggles throughout civil war history. The 1,800 acre Vicksburg National Military Park is home to hundreds of priceless works of art that commemorate the siege of Vicksburg in 1863.

The guide's author is Parker Hill, a retired Brigadier General. The park is home to 1,300 monuments, reconstructed forts, cannons and largest national cemetery of union soldiers in the country.

The 100 page guide was made possible by a grant from the National Park Service's Lower Mississippi Delta Initiative. The park will soon make plans for a year long observance of the 150 anniversary of the siege of Vicksburg.
