Window falls increase during hot weather

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As temperatures reach record numbers across most of the country -- experts are asking parents to make sure their children are safe near open windows.

A recent study found fourteen children are treated for window fall- related injuries every day -- and the number tends to spike as people open their windows to beat the heat.

Researchers suggest installing window guards on all second story windows, or use window stops to prevent them from opening more than four inches.

Just this week at least three children have fallen from second story windows in which a screen was in place. Experts say parents should not expect window screens to prevent falls.
