Miss Delta Blues and Miss Spirit of the South score preliminary wins

Posted: Updated:

The final night of preliminary competition at Miss Mississippi started almost two hours late Friday night due to a broken water pipe. The problem cut off water to the Vicksburg Convention Center and the audience was not allowed in until the problem was fixed.

Vicksburg city crews were praised for moving quickly and the show did go on. To make up for lost time, all the production numbers were eliminated except the finale.

Judges still made up their minds about the best in talent, swimwear and evening wear. In talent, Jasmine MKurray, Miss Spirit of the South was the winner. She is a former Miss Mississippi outstanding teen, and made the top 13 on American Idol when she was only 16 years old.

This is Murray's first time competing for the Miss Mississippi title. She wins a 300 dollar scholarship and is hoping she has scored high enough with the judges to make the top 10 Saturday night.

In swimwear , Miss Delta Blues, Ashley Hamby was the winner. She is from Madison and this is her second year to compete at Miss Mississippi and her first win in preliminary competition.

There have been six winners announced in talent and swimwear this week.

Each of the 42 contestants still have a chance to make the top 10. We will find out who will make the cut shortly after the Miss Mississippi Pageant begins.

You can see the pageant on WLBT beginning at 8pm tonight.
