JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The city of Jackson opened two community centers, Northside and Smith-Robertson, on Saturday for residents who do not have air conditioning.
The centers provided water and several activities to those who took advantage of a rare Saturday opening.
Sharon Dallis, Coordinator of the Smith-Robertson Community Center, says several people took advantage of the opportunity but most were gone by noon.
"It's sort of like having a burden lifted off them to know that I don't have to sit outside in the heat; having something cool and refreshing to drink. Although it's from 8 A.M. - 4 P.M. , that's better than nothing at all," said Dallis.
All seven community centers will be closed Sunday but will reopen Monday morning.
