HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors approved more than $1.3 million in maintenance funds for the Raymond Detention Center. The board responded to the county administrator's request to use money from a 2007A bond funds for maintenance at the jail.

While much of the money will go toward routine up-keep, hundreds-of-thousands of dollars will go toward fixing jail doors, security cameras and razor wire. Sheriff Tyrone Lewis said the improvements are needed ASAP and are a step in the right direction when it comes to keeping inmates from escaping.

"To keep the inmates locked down, which means fixing the lock to the doors and once we can secure them we can proceed to fix the other maintenance problems," Lewis said.

Lewis said they are vetting jail experts to come in and assess the county's needs concerning a new jail or re-habbing the current facility.
