JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Rats, snakes and insects are always a concern with abandoned, overgrown property. But there's an even bigger, more dangerous threat to folks who live across the street from 1418 Palmyra Street in west Jackson.
You've seen abandoned, dilapidated houses on overgrown lots many times before in Taking Back Our Neighborhoods reports.
David Lewis, who lives across the street from one, said, "It's been many years since there were tenants over there and since then, it's just, it makes the neighborhood look really bad."
It's an abandoned house in disrepair, overtaken by weeds and trash, but this is the first time we've come across a situation like 1418 Palmyra Street. Two pit bulldogs were chained behind the abandoned house on either side and not too happy to see our camera.
Lewis said it's cause for concern because the animals can be dangerous.
"Yeah, they very aggressive animals and if they're not fed, I guess, there's a good possibility they can attack," said Lewis.
David Lewis lives across the street in 1421 Palmyra Street.
"I guess someone's taking care of them, but there's no one living in the home so I don't believe they should be dogs over there."
Lewis said there are children in the neighborhood and he's concerned for their safety. But equally important, says Lewis, is the fact that he and the rest of the residents of this community, take pride in keeping up their property.
"I just want whoever owns it to come over, just clean it up. It'll make our neighborhood look a lot better," said Lewis. "I believe the neighborhood, my whole block here is with me on that."
Lewis said he has not called the Mayor's Action Line or Community Improvement, but he says, a city crew did come out and clean up the property once.
We will check with Jackson officials to find out if 1418 Palmyra is on the radar to be declared a nuisance property and let you know what we find out.
