Chilling at the Jackson Zoo

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With a heat index of 104 degrees, one of the coolest places to be was the Jackson Zoological Park.

Animals at the zoo, like a 300 pound tiger, sought out a shady spot. Malaysian tapers headed for the pool while many zoo visitors this Fourth of July enjoyed refreshing summertime fun.

A new "Splash Pad" is a huge success. It features a tiger slide, pelican sprinkler, you can even have a fish fight.

The Berry family from Ridgeland said this was a great way to beat the heat.

"I love it. We always love coming to the zoo and the Jackson Zoo has so many things for families and this is just another wonderful thing they have," said Bridgid Berry.

"It looks like the Splash Pad is really cool. It is really cool. And if it doesn't cool off quicker, I may join them in it," said deputy director Dave Wetzel.

While the price of admission to the zoo is up, tickets now include the Splash Pad as well as free parking.

The zoo is open 7 days a week.
