JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police continue to investigate the beating death of a young child. A capital murder warrant has been issued for Johnny Williams, 38, of Jackson. The mother faces identical charges. Williams is wanted in connection with the death of his 18 month old child.

Williams has a rap sheet that includes domestic abuse and several misdemeanor traffic violations.

The mother of young Jada Williams made her initial appearance before a judge Thursday morning. Jasmine Porter, 23, was arrested and originally charged with felony child abuse.

The charges were upgraded to capital murder following an autopsy on the child Wednesday.

The couple lived at a west Jackson apartment complex on Ellis Avenue. Most neighbors said they did not know Porter or Williams. But a maintenance man had seen them.

"It's sad, real sad. I feel hurt for the child," said Lovelace Tartt.

The child was taken to CMMC where she died. The Hinds County Coroner told us late Thursday, 18-month-old Jada Williams had been beaten to death. The child suffered "severe bruising" on her upper and lower torso. This abuse had occurred before.

The coroner confirmed there was evidence of old injuries.
