JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson man wanted in connection with the beating death of his child is behind bars.

Jackson Police Department Officer Colendula Green said 28-year-old Johnny Williams was arrested Friday on capital murder charges.

According to police, Williams is responsible for the death of his daughter, 18-month-old Jada Williams.

Her mother, 23-year-old Jasmine Porter, was arrested and also charged with capital murder following an autopsy on the child Wednesday.

Saturday evening neighbors held a vigil and placed mementos outside the Ellis Avenue apartment where little Jada lived.

They lit candles and said a prayer for the child they remembered as quiet and happy.

Residents say they gave the toddler nickname "Juicy" because she was plump.

Among those remembering Jada was Debra Porter who said she often babysat the child.

"It happened Tuesday. I kept her Monday and Sunday and she was fine on both of those days. So I don't know. I never saw any abuse take place. I can guaranty you that," said Debra Porter.

The Hinds County coroner said the toddler suffered severe bruising on her upper and lower torso.

The coroner confirmed there was evidence of old injuries.
