Delayed outlet center finally gets green light

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new outlet center is headed to the metro area, and it will be open for business in just over a year.

The outlets at Bloomfield have been in the works since 2004, but in recent years the project lost steam as the economy slumped.

Now developers say they're back on track, and plan to bring the first outlet mall to the metro area.

Starting this fall, developers say they'll begin to turn the open field next to Trustmark Park and Bass Pro Shops, into a shopping mecca.

The Outlets At Bloomfield will feature over 80 designer and name brand discount stores. City leaders say it's a well needed shot in the arm for their economy.

Pearl Mayor Brad Rogers says, "We don't know the exact numbers this investment will have on our tax profile, I guess you would say, but I can tell you it will be significant.  Very significant the folks it will bring here, not only will they shop, they will also stay in the area, eat in the area, will buy gas in the area."

Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th plans to occupy a 20-thousand foot anchor store in the 325-thousand square foot facility. Nike, J Crew, Under Armour just to name a few, are also committed to the project.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kathy Deer says, "That's going to mean jobs, that's going to mean hundreds of jobs, it's going to complete that destination for a shopping destination to come actually spend a weekend, go to a Braves game, go to Sam's, go to Bass Pro, got to the outlet mall, spend all your money."

The outlet center is being privately financed. They expecting up to three million visitors a year.

"Those are upscale stores, if you've ever been to the outlet mall in Gulfport, this will be similar but bigger and better," says Deer.

Developers say they plan to have the Bloomfield outlet completed by late next year.

They plan to announce more of the stores at the groundbreaking this fall.
