Woman finds masked gunmen lurking in her driveway

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Kansas City mother was in for quite a shock when she pulled into her driveway and spotted masked men with guns lurking around her home.

It was all caught on tape near Elmwood and Cypress avenues in Kansas City.

Footage captured by a home security system clearly showing a situation that would terrify any homeowner.  So of course, anyone would call 911 and expect police to show up in a few minutes, but for one woman that wait was closer to an hour.

Nephateri Hill is a devoted mother who takes her family's safety very seriously.  So she and her husband had a state of the art security system, complete with surveillance cameras, installed.

And unfortunately it didn't take long for that investment to pay off.

Hill was coming home early Saturday morning when her teenage daughter yelled at her from a window warning her about three masked men.  The surveillance video clearly showed the trio casing the home, apparently looking for a way to break in.

One of the men even had what appeared to be a shotgun.

"I was terrified," Hill said.

So Hill called 911 three times, but says it took police more than an hour to send anyone out.  To make matters worse, Hill says the police that did eventually respond refused to do anything.

"Basically they couldn't do anything because we don't have a no trespassing sign. It is legal to have a gun. They didn't do any damage, and they didn't get in the home, so we couldn't make a report," she said.

But police defended their response saying there were three shootings in the area straining their resources.  Police also said that the second time Hill called 911 she reported the men had left, so the call was downgraded to a lower priority.

But that doesn't ease Hill's concerns.

"The fact that we said there was someone with a gun should have been enough for them to send someone out.  Period," she said.

Police stress this was an extremely busy night.  Basically a perfect storm that slowed down their response time. Authorities said the All-Star Game had nothing to do with it, and that all patrols are at normal staffing levels all week long.
