BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Nearly all of the customers who come through D's One Stop Convenience Store on Highway 80 in Brandon shop at the store regularly. However, on Tuesday, July 3rd, a clerk named Shanell said she rang up a customer she'd never seen before. That customer was Roy Mitchell. In surveillance video, Mitchell is shown picking up some chips. He acts like he's paying and that's when things turn for the worse at the register.
"Next thing I know he pulled a gun out and he was pointing it and he was saying I want what you have in the register," Shanell told WLBT.
The clerk said she was completely caught off guard when Mitchell pointed the gun at her.
"I'm like, are you serious? I hesitated I asked him again, like, are you for real?" said Shanell.
Mitchell's mom, who was also in the store walked to the register right on time, snatched the gun from her son and demanded Mitchell to walk out.
"It's a good thing she did walk up when she did because he might have went on and just took the money and left the store and she still probably would not have known what happened," said Shanell.
Numerous cameras surround the inside and the outside of D's One Stop Convenience Store, but obviously Mitchell wasn't paying close attention when he attempted to rob the place.
"He seemed like he wasn't really coherent, a little slow like I guess that's why I hesitated and asked him are you serious" said Shanell.
Once Mitchell's mom grabbed what turned out to be a toy gun from her son, the clerk said the mom and son fussed a bit and that's when Shanell went out the side door to call 911. Despite the terrifying ordeal, Shanell said she feels safe at work.
"You know you're not going to get away with too much in Rankin County because the police do their job," said Shanell.
Shanell said the attempted armed robbery was one of the scariest experiences she's ever gone through at work.
