BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The young armed robbery suspect who used a fake gun in a robbery attempt at a convenience store in Brandon was in court Wednesday afternoon. Twenty-two-year-old Roy Mitchell waived his preliminary hearing in Brandon Municipal Court.
Mitchell appeared confused. His court-appointed Public Defender had to explain what the Judge meant.
The Judge did not reduce his $300,000 bond based on previous run-in's with the law.
Detectives say Mitchell pulled a gun on a convenience store clerk last week. The attempted robbery was captured on surveillance video. His mother is seen snatching the toy gun away.
Before court Wednesday, Sharron Cameron expressed dismay and disappointment over her son's frightening actions.
"I didn't know whether the gun was real an I was so shocked and disappointed and hurt that I saw my son standing there with the gun on the lady clerk" said Cameron. "Like I said, I just can't explain.
Cameron said her son should be punished and held accountable for his actions, but told reporters, due to his long term struggle with mental illness he should not be in jail.
