CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police say a woman has died from her injuries after she was choked by a man during an altercation at a Charlotte hotel.

According to police, 39-year-old Yolanda Cooper died on Friday after she was choked by 43-year-old Edward Timothy McClain at the Knights Inn hotel along Glenwood Drive on Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called to the hotel around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, police told WBTV.

The manager told officers that McClain, who was staying at the inn, called the desk claiming he was being robbed by a female who was in a hotel room with him.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Cooper inside of the hotel room unconscious. Her injuries were so severe that she was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, where she later died.

McClain was taken into custody on Thursday night, charged with assault with a deadly weapon. After Cooper's death, police charged McClain with murder.

The two are known to each other, police told WBTV on Thursday.
