Two Mississippi Senators sponsor the Stolen Valor Act

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two senators from Mississippi are co-sponsoring a bill in Congress to set criminal penalties for people who lie about their military service or service-related honors to gain profit or benefits.

Republican Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker announced their support of the stolen valor act Friday.

The legislation was drafted to avoid freedom of speech issues outlined in a June 28th Supreme Court ruling that overturned a 2005 law making it illegal to simply lie about military service.

Cochran and Wicker are both military veterans.

Cochran served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, while Wicker served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve.
