JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Starting Monday some law enforcement officers will begin new training to identify mentally ill subjects.
A team of psychiatrists is expected to assist with the training, which is a project partnered with UMMC, mental health agencies, and the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.
Monday's training will have a class of eight Hinds County Sheriff's Deputies and three security officers from the University of Mississippi Medical School.
Each officer will receive 40 hours of training on how to approach and handle a subject as well as how to help them.
Plans call for additional training every three to four months.
