True South Classic is underway

MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi's only annual professional sporting event gets underway this week.The 2012 True South Classic is being held at Annandale Golf Club in Madison through Sunday. 

This is one of only 45 PGA TOUR tournaments held each year. The True South Classic, formerly the Viking Classic, has been part of the PGA Tour schedule in Mississippi since 1968 and is now in its second year as part of the season-long FedEx Cup.

This event has raised more than $6.8 million for statewide charities.

Tournament director John Marovich says he hopes the event can raise $500,000 this year for the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children. 

This year's sponsors include Trustmark Bank, NewSouth NeuroSpine, Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, Jackson Heart Clinic, and GI Associates and Endoscopy Center. The various sponsors will offer daily health screenings. 

Sunday is ladies day with a visit by Sweet Potato Queen Jill Conner Browne. Ticket packages for the Gals on the Green, includes 2 passes for the tournament, and one pass for her 3 p.m. book signing for $100.  

Daily tickets to the tournament are $20. A week long parking pass is $10.
