Storms Pack A Punch

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Shortly after three Thursday afternoon heavy thunderstorms packed with lightning hit the metro area and according to the National Weather Service there was damage and flash flooding throughout Central Mississippi.

Heavy rain in a short period of time is always a recipe for trouble at the Downtown Jackson viaduct at Monument and Mill Streets. Drivers who tried to maneuver their way through the high water paid the price. Several cars were submerged.

But the problems with the heavy rain did not stop there, at Fortification and Blair Streets parts of Fortification were completely under water. Children watched from a front porch as the rain came down.

Belhaven Creek which usually has a quiet trickle, looked more like a rushing river at Wood Dale Drive and Cavalier Drive. Up to a foot of water also covered part of Lakeland Drive near St. Dominic Hospital around 3:30 Thursday at the height of the storm.

While the metro area had to deal with the heavy rain there were also reports across the state of problems with the weather. An 18 wheeler was blown over in Belzoni, there was also minor roof damage and a small building was blown over in Humphreys County.

Flash flooding was reported in Madison county, near Canton. Water also covered the road at East Sowell Road and Smith Carr Road.

A tree and power lines were down across Old Rice Road in Madison. Water also covered the road at U.S. Highway 51 and Yandell Road. There was also flash flooding on the south end of Highland Colony Parkway and near Northpark Mall.
