Bonnie Kate Pourciau answers questions from a Denver hospital.
Bonnie Kate Pourciau and Elizabeth Sumrall were able to smile days after surviving the tragic shooting.
DENVER, CO (WAFB) -
The Baton Rouge teenager wounded in Friday's mass shooting inside a Colorado movie theater said she did not think she would survive the horrifying ordeal.
Bonnie Kate Pourciau, 18, spoke from her hospital room in Denver on Sunday.
Pourciau and a friend, Elizabeth Sumrall, were inside the theater when gunfire erupted. Pourciau was shot in her knee and has undergone surgeries for her injuries. Sumrall was not injured.
"This doesn't feel like it's part of our trip," Pourciau said. "Our trip was too magical."
Pourciau and Sumrall had a Seattle to Baton Rouge road trip all planned out. The itinerary did not include a stay at the University of Colorado Hospital or a life-altering gunshot wound.
"We made it through seven of the 10 days and they were amazing and wonderful," Sumrall said. "And then, we randomly came here."
The "here" she mentioned is an Aurora, CO theater for the midnight showing of the new Batman movie, where they became part of one of the worst mass shootings in US history. In an instant, a night at the movies turned into a journey for survival in a barrage of gunfire.
"I grabbed Elizabeth and pulled her down and we hid behind our seats," Pourciau explained.
"Did not see the guy at all. We were thankfully far enough up and we ducked down very quickly, so I wasn't looking that direction or looking for someone," Sumrall added.
"We were hiding down there for a little while, just holding still, praying and then while we were down there, that's when I felt like a huge 2x4 smack my leg. I was like, 'Oh, this is real. I've been shot,'" Pourciau said.
Her mother described the phone call she received early Friday morning.
"I was in a deep sleep at 1:37 and the phone rang and Bonnie Kate just said, 'Mom, I've been shot and there was a bomb.' I'm like, 'Back up,'" Kathleen Pourciau said.
"I didn't think I was going to make it. I was in excruciating, a lot amount of pain. But, I had a peace and I was, I just felt like God really just wrapped me up and held me and I was okay," Bonnie Kate said.
"God provided amazingly through people that didn't know us and didn't have to care about us and were just so amazing," Sumrall added.
By the time Bonnie Kate's first surgery was over, her parents had arrived to be at her side.
"We're really grateful. That's the overwhelming thing I felt. I just felt really thankful, really thankful," Kathleen explained.
"That, number one she's okay," said Trace Pourciau, Bonnie Kate's father. "And then, to just see God's people come together in a support that's been pouring out from everywhere, it's just amazing."
Bonnie Kate said despite what happened, there was a reason she went to that movie.
"God preserved my life and who knows what he's going to do, how he's going to use this for his glory and for my good. I know he's, as sure as I don't like it and it's been very hard, but I'm thankful that God softened it and is in control of all this and that he's at work and he's doing something through it," she said.
