CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A local gospel singer is vying for an appearance on the popular BET show "Sunday Best".

Ashford Sanders of Canton auditioned for a spot on the hit singing showcase.

A watch party was held Sunday night at the Canton Community Center to watch Sanders on the national stage.

Sanders received cheers for his performance, "Millions" by the Winans and won Sunday's competition. He now advances to the third round.

"Sunday Best" holds gospel singing auditions across the country to feature on the national program.

Judges look for a combination of musical talent, grace, passion and style in selecting singers.

Dozens of "Team Ashford Supporters" watched his big win.

"He's gonna bring home the win. We're proud of you Ashford. We expect him to go all the way," said Lakiska Garrett, a supporter.

"Team Ashford" will return to the same spot next week for another watch party and vow to return as long as he is in the competition.
