Meeting to focus on fate of Jackson armory

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The future of the historic Hinds County armory on the state fairgrounds is the subject of a State Fair Commission meeting Tuesday.

The Clarion-Ledger reports the meeting, on the acceptance of a grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to stabilize the armory, is set for 10 a.m. at the state Department of Agriculture and Commerce office.

The armory, which was added to the state's list of endangered places in 2009, has been a key training center over the years, and at one point, served as a mobilization point for men going off to fight in World War II.

It was designated as a Mississippi Landmark in 1986 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
