Stokes and Jackson React

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In February, Larita Cooper-Stokes won a runoff against Joyce Jackson. But last month a Hinds County jury found the election was filled with illegal activity by poll workers.

A new election was set for Tuesday, but Stokes earlier this month said she wanted a new trial and planned to appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court. We talked with Stokes Tuesday night at the Cornerstone Church in Jackson and with her opponent Joyce Jackson.

Jackson says the people of her ward have spoken.

"I don't feel sad. I feel happy. I know that the people never realized the laws that have been broken for 20 years. So it was like they had been asleep, so now they're awake", said Jackson.

"I call today a day of justice. The city election workers were maligned and lied on in the election contest trial, and I believe they now have justice", Stokes said.

Stokes attended the city council meeting representing Ward 3, Tuesday night,  before heading to the church to thank supporters.
