Fortification Street lanes closed amidst construction

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Work zone barriers are already in place signifying the beginning of an 18 month project to improve Fortification Street in Jackson. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on Fortification St., between Jefferson St. and Greymont Ave, Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27.

The traffic shift will allow crews to begin work removing poor soils under Fortification St., east of Jefferson St., and install new utility lines that will replace the existing utility lines.

The travel lanes will use the existing asphalt pavement and will only be 10 ft. wide.  Officials in Mayor Harvey Johnson's office stress that motorists should drive with caution in the work zone due to the narrow lanes, the condition of the roadway, and presence of construction workers and equipment.

Motorists may encounter intermittent lane closures in both directions.  The traffic shift will be in effect for six to seven months until utility replacement and street reconstruction work on the south side of Fortification St. is complete.
