JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
An Amtrak passenger train slammed into a gravel truck in south Jackson Monday morning. The accident happened at the Elton Road crossing off Interstate 55.
The train was traveling to New Orleans. The gravel truck driver apparently did not see the train or stop and look.
The City of New Orleans train clipped the rear of the dump truck and sent it flying off the tracks. The driver suffered injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
An eyewitness said he couldn't believe what he saw.
"It was just unbelievable. I was in shock. I didn't know. I prayed to God he was alright. When we got to him, he was ok," said Anthony Cole.
The truck's wheels and axel were strewn down the tracks.
No one on the train was injured.
The only warning signs at the Elton Road tracks were two older signs. There are no bells or crossing gates.
